CHAPTER 2
Rainkit felt concern creep onto her pelt. Was there anything wrong with their father?
Surely not. Rockstar is the bravest cat in all the clans. Nothing can easily scare him. But rainkit could not convince herself. Suddeenly she felt a blow in the side of her stomach. She gasped, coming back to the present, and fell over. Wildkit was looking at her, her golden eyes wide with anger. "Do I have your attention now?" she growled.
"S-sorry," Rainkit stammered, scrambling up. Turning her head around she licked the grit off of her gray and black fur.
"Honestly, what are you so concerned about?" Wildkit asked, padding over to sit next to her.
"Our father," Rainkit admitted.
"Oh lighten up!" Wildkit sighed. "There's nothing wrong with him." Rainkit didn't respond. She just continued to lick her pelt.
"Hey i know what will cheer you up. Lets sneak out of camp!" Rainkit looked at her in surprise. Usually she was the one to suggest things like that. Wildkit never went along with it. But Rainkit did want to explore the territory.
What's the harm in it? "That sounds fun," she mewed. "Lets go!"
Quietly the two kits started to inch themselves towards the enterance of the camp. They were almost out when a call stopped them in their tracks. "Wildkit! Rainkit! What are you doing?" Rainkit let in an inward sigh.
Cherrytail.Cherrytail ran over to them, her eyes burning. "Were you trying to sneak out of the camp?" she hissed. Rainkit stood up straight. "We were not, mother," she mewed. "We were just peeking out to see if the patrol was back."
Cherrytail glared at her disbelievingly. "I want you two back in the nurcery.
Now.""But-" Wildkit started.
"Now!"Disappointed, Wildkit and Rainkit gave in and went back into the nurcery. Wildkit flopped down. "This stinks!" she hissed. "Why is Cherrytail so annoying?" Rainkit shrugged. "Who knows." Rainkit sighed, and stated pacing around the den. Out of the corner of her eye Rainkit spotted a tiny tunnel hidden by a rock in the back of the nurcery. Rainkit padded over to it. It was certainly small, but maybe she could fit. Ducking down, Rainkit stuck her head into the tunnel and then her front paws. She fit!
"Rainkit, what in StarClan's name are you doing?" Wildkit asked skeptically.
"I found a tunnel!" Rainkit mewed back. "I'm going to see where it leads."
"Are you crazy?" Wildkit hissed. "What if Cherrytail comes back? She'll have your tail!"
"No she won't. She's out on patrol. Are you coming or what?"
Wildkit paused. Then Rainkit heard her mew, "Okay." Wriggling in, Rainkit stared to claw her way in. Once she was in, she started to pad through the tunnel. Her belly touched the ground. It was so tight she could barley fit. Still moving, Rainkit realized that the tunnel led up. Light was ahead.
"I see the exit, Wildkit!" she exclaimed.
"Good, cause I really hate this!" Rainkit and Wildkit were at the opening in a few heartbeats.
"I'm going to look," Rainkit mewed. Thrusting her head up, she open her eyes and looked around. They were outside the camp!
"We're outside of the camp!" Rainkit mewed. "Now we can explore." Rainkit struggled and heaved until she finally was out of the hole. "Come on, Wildkit!" Rainkit saw her sister's head poke out, and her eyes widened in excitement. Wildkit soon got out after some struggling.
"It's beautiful," Wildkit breathed.
"Yeah," Rainkit mewed. "It's a lot bett-"
Suddenly Wildkit shuddered. Her tail was sticking straight out, and her eyes were as wide as moons.
"Wildkit?" Rainkit mewed. But Wildkit just kept staring. She whispered something under her breath. Suddenly her tabby sister bolted out into the denser forest. "Wildkit! What are you doing?" Rainkit yowled. But her sister kept running. Rainkit took off after her. She couldn't let her sister just keep going. She could get hurt!
Following a random path Rainkit kept running after her sister, calling her name. Wildkit kept on running.
A rumble of thunder sounded in the distance, and rain started pouring from the sky. But Rainkit continued running. Her lungs were bursting. Her legs were aching. Could she keep this up?
After for what seemed like hours of running Rainkit stopped. Ahead of her Wildkit had stopped. She was whispering, as if talking to someone. Rainkit didn't move. Suddenly Wildkit yowled something and turned around, her face stained with mud. She didn't realize Rainkit until after a few heartbeats. Her eyes widened. "Rainkit! You're here! Did you here it too?"
"Hear what?" Rainkit asked, baffled. What was her sister talking about?
"The voice!" she gasped. "It called my name and told me to follow it."
"So you
did?" Rainkit screeched. "We can be in danger!"
"We're not," she insisted. "I felt as if it had to tell me something. And it did." Rainkit just stared at her. Wildkit went on, her eyes dark with fear. "It told me, 'Remember the past. Search for answers. If nothing is done all will be lost.'"
Rainkit stared at her in shock.
Could it be?A few nights ago, Rainkit had had a dream. She was in a dark forest. It was raining. Thunder and lightning pierced the sky. A voice had whispered in her ear a message. The voice was low and sinister. It had said the same exact thing to her that Wildkit had heard.
